Lake Meeting

02/13/2008 - 6:30pm
The next Lake meeting is on Wenesday, the 13th of Feb. This is again a working group meeting that is open to the public, but NOT necessarily open to public comment; until the public portion is opened by the chairwoman. I may not have done a good enough job of describing the format of these meetings in my last posting: It is now a 20 person (seat) group that has been formed to figure a solution to the invasive weed problem.

LAKE UPDATE! PLEASE READ!

Connie Kepert, our Town Councilwoman, has assembled a group of 20 people,  and/or groups  to address the invasive weed problem that we have in the lakes. It consists of a 20 seat panel of community residents, environmental groups, and various political offices. Specifically:

The Lake Meeting with the Politicians - Nov 14th

Thanks to the folks for a good turnout at the Nov 14th meeting. The elected officials have seen first hand that the town is very interested in this important issue. I have been in constant contact with the local politicians, Town, County and State, and they are firmly behind a timely solution to the problem.

Coalition to Save the Lakes

We have formed a Coalition to save the lakes and to clean up the entire Carmen River system. We want to research and explore any and all options to clean up our lakes and to fight the removal of the dams at the upper and the lower lakes.

We have several options available to us .We have dredging, harvesting, chemical, drawdown and covering the lakes in areas to block out the light thus killing off the weeds. The final solution may be one or all of these options.

The Lake Meeting with the Politicians

11/14/2007 - 6:30pm
A meeting date has been set to discuss the lake issues. Wednesday, Nov. 14th, 6:30PM, at the firehouse. The meeting has been set by Connie Kepert's office. We are trying to have Kate Browning, Marc Alessi, Pete Scully, Pat Eddington, Ken LaValle, and any other Politician that wants to be there. This is "THE"  meeting on the lake, and I believe much information will be discussed.

Lake update

Had a meeting on Thursday Sept. 27th with Glenn Sullivan from Allied Biological, and Anthony Graves from Brookhaven Town Environmental. We met at the lower lake, and saw from the dam the condition of the lake from that vantage point. From there, we went to my house and saw the weeds from my dock. Allied Biological is the company from NJ that treated Peconic.

Lake Update (about last Friday's meeting)

I believe the meeting went well. The premise of it was for The Nature Conservancy and Trout Unlimited to bring their agenda to the community. I'm sure they were very surprised to see that many people come to oppose them on a Friday afternoon. GREAT TURNOUT!! They saw firsthand what these lakes mean to us and the rest of the Yaphank area. Kudos to John Rauh for his last minute polling. There was no mistaking where everyone stood after that.

Cabomba erraticated from the Peconic River Sportsmans Club's Donohue Pond

09/10/2007 - 9:50am

The Peconic River Sportsmans Club's Donohue Pond has been treated with a herbicide all summer. Their problems have been much the same as ours.  Cabomba and Milfoil have choked out this portion of the Peconic river for years. I had the opportunity to see the results of the treatment on Wednesday the 5th of Sept. I can tell you first hand that the results are terrific. Almost all of the invasive plants are dead or dying, while the native lily pads are flourishing. They say that fishing has never been better, and the renewed interest in fishing and boating is phenomenal.

Public Meeting on Yaphank Lakes

09/14/2007 - 1:00pm
09/14/2007 - 3:00pm

A meeting has been scheduled for Friday, Sept. 14th at 1PM (Yes, sorry, Friday at 1pm in the afternoon) at the Clubhouse at Seigfried Park, Private Rd, Yaphank.

I just got off the phone with Bob Kessler. He just spoke to Alpa Pandya from the Nature Conservancy.  This is just preliminary, but it looks like several agencies and politicians will be there.   - Chad
