September 2006

We are planning a dedication of the Carman’s River Nature Trail and Sanctuary on Saturday, September 16th, from 2pm-4pm Light refreshments will be served. We’ encourage you to join us that day to walk the nature trail, vi the Weeks Family Octagon House Foundation, the Weeks cranberry bog and pond, and enjoy all that nature has so graciously provided us. Keep the date open!

Our Election of Officers was held during the General Meeting on August 18th, 2006. The officers are listed elsewhere on this page. Let me take this opportunity to thank the members who have served during the past year: Jim Hololob, Richard Smid, and Christel Theune. And let me welcome Erich Bremer, Donna Murray, and Donna Trusnovec to the Board. The Society has held wonderful events and achieved significant recognition during the past year, and looks forward to continuing those efforts in the year ahead.

Included in this newsletter is a letter recently received from Ronald F. Foley, Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conversation. In it he thanks the Yaphank Historical Society for our continuing work to maintain and welcome the public to one of Long Island’s most important and prominent historic areas.

The following presentations are scheduled for next three general meetings: Thursday, September 21st, 2006, 7:30pm - Presentation on the proposed Brookhaven Walk at Exit 68 on the LIE; Thursday, October 19th, 2006, 7:30pm - Linda Petersen will give a presentation about the Davis Homestead; and Thursday, November 16th, 2006, 7:30pm - Steve Trusnovec will give a presentation about the Yaphank Cemetery.
