It was announced at a recent PTA meeting that Longwood will be discontinuing all of their Honors programs! I was in many honors classes when I attended Longwood in the 1980s and I find it distressing that if I stay in this district my children will not be afforded the same opportunity to excel. Many colleges look at how many honors classes a student has taken as a measure of whether a student is willing to put in that extra effort even if there is no 'official' (state afforded) credit for that effort (as in AP classes). As we look to a potential addition of 1000? (not sure where I got that number) new students for Charles E Walters as a result of the planned development behind the police station, I wonder what kind of education our kids will be able to eek out in this district. My mind goes back to when we had austerity and triple sessions in this district and 35+ kids in a class. (I remember having to site on the window sill at one point).
