Lake Meeting

02/13/2008 - 6:30pm
The next Lake meeting is on Wenesday, the 13th of Feb. This is again a working group meeting that is open to the public, but NOT necessarily open to public comment; until the public portion is opened by the chairwoman. I may not have done a good enough job of describing the format of these meetings in my last posting: It is now a 20 person (seat) group that has been formed to figure a solution to the invasive weed problem. I've already detailed each seat in other postings, so I won't go over it again. At each meeting a different speaker will bring us (the 20 seat panel) more information to help us come to an educated solution to the weed problem. Last meeting brought us a DEC employee. He was extremely informative, and brought us a wide view and information on virtually every option available to us. Whether we like them or not, all options need to be discussed, and hopefully some will be off the table as fast as they come on the table.
Wednesday brings us Glenn Sullivan from Allied Biological. Allied is the company that treated Peconic River Sportsmans Club.  Peconic is a 38 acre lake, that is part of the Peconic River. They have many similarities to us, and it has been very successful. It killed the invasive weeds, and left many of the native plants intact, and the fish and other wildlife unharmed.
It is not the Silver Bullet, but it has worked well, and I suspect there will be many questions, and much discussion. The problem is;  There is NO Silver Bullet. This is a severe problem that has been allowed to get out of control, and unfortunately there is no perfect solution. However, this is one solution that has a 25 year track record.
Please send this to all your friends and neighbors, and lets have a great turnout as we did last meeting. The officials need to see a Yaphank contingent at each meeting to remind them we are watching.
Wednesday the 13th, 6:30 PM, 3rd Floor  Work session Room.
