Levy World Forum Meeting

03/27/2008 - 8:00pm
03/27/2008 - 10:00pm

Brookhaven residents can finally sound off on County Executive Levy's plans to build a huge project in bucolic Yaphank.

Suffolk County Legislator Dan Losquadro (R-Mount Sinai), and Brookhaven Town Fourth District Councilwoman Connie Kepert plan a community forum to hear resident concerns, ideas and and objections to the planned proposal.  Concerns will be fed back to county and town lawmakers for consideration and prompt actions.

The project is planned within the County's 3rd Legislative District.  However, Legislator Kate Browning has not been slated to appear at the Forum.

Have your say...this important community forum is scheduled for March 27 at 8 p.m. at Longwood High School, located at 100 Longwood Road in Middle Island

Lake Meeting

02/13/2008 - 6:30pm
The next Lake meeting is on Wenesday, the 13th of Feb. This is again a working group meeting that is open to the public, but NOT necessarily open to public comment; until the public portion is opened by the chairwoman. I may not have done a good enough job of describing the format of these meetings in my last posting: It is now a 20 person (seat) group that has been formed to figure a solution to the invasive weed problem. I've already detailed each seat in other postings, so I won't go over it again. At each meeting a different speaker will bring us (the 20 seat panel) more information to help us come to an educated solution to the weed problem. Last meeting brought us a DEC employee. He was extremely informative, and brought us a wide view and information on virtually every option available to us. Whether we like them or not, all options need to be discussed, and hopefully some will be off the table as fast as they come on the table.
Wednesday brings us Glenn Sullivan from Allied Biological. Allied is the company that treated Peconic River Sportsmans Club.  Peconic is a 38 acre lake, that is part of the Peconic River. They have many similarities to us, and it has been very successful. It killed the invasive weeds, and left many of the native plants intact, and the fish and other wildlife unharmed.
It is not the Silver Bullet, but it has worked well, and I suspect there will be many questions, and much discussion. The problem is;  There is NO Silver Bullet. This is a severe problem that has been allowed to get out of control, and unfortunately there is no perfect solution. However, this is one solution that has a 25 year track record.
Please send this to all your friends and neighbors, and lets have a great turnout as we did last meeting. The officials need to see a Yaphank contingent at each meeting to remind them we are watching.
Wednesday the 13th, 6:30 PM, 3rd Floor  Work session Room.

LAKE UPDATE! PLEASE READ!

Connie Kepert, our Town Councilwoman, has assembled a group of 20 people,  and/or groups  to address the invasive weed problem that we have in the lakes. It consists of a 20 seat panel of community residents, environmental groups, and various political offices. Specifically:

Representing Yaphank- Chad Trusnovec, Steve Trusnovec, John Stehle, Bob Kessler
Non Profit Agencies- Trout Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy, The Open Space Council, The Citizens Campaign for the Environment.
Community Organizations- Fran Hurley, Johan McConnell, representing Yaphank and South Yaphank Civics; respectively
Political Offices- Town Coucilwoman Kepert, County Legislator Browning, State Assemblyman Alessi,State Assemblywoman Eddington, State Senator LaValle
Environmental- Anthony Graves from the TOB, NYSDEC, Suffolk County DPW, SC Environment and Energy, SC Dept of Health.
As you can see, there is a great deal of diversity on this board. My concern is that there is still a great amount of push to remove the dams. I believe, from a community standpoint, that dam removal should be removed from the list of options.  While community opposition has been large, we need to keep up the pressure on all parties involved. That is why I'm asking all people reading this to go to the next meeting of the working group. It will be at the Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville, Thurs, Jan 31st, 6:30 PM, 2nd Floor media room.
Please bring the kids,.... This is as much about the future generation as anything in our lives.
                                                                       Chad Trusnovec
